This is one of our albino rainbow trout. It has a genetic defect that it can’t create pigment for its skin or scales.
Twenty years ago, our father had a batch of albinos show up spontaneously during breeding. He thought the egg tray was empty because the babies are nearly invisible!
Once they’re big enough, you can actually see their brains through the top of their head!
Albinism shows up in all sorts of creature, from lobsters to lions. These trout probably wouldn’t survive in the wild, as they’d be the first fish that herons and other predators could see!
We mainly keep the albino family going as pets. They also contain the genetics of a trout family that isn’t around anymore, so we hold onto them to add diversity into our breeding lines.
They may look pretty, but they tend to taste leaner and tougher than our other trout. That’s because they grow twice as slowly!
