Yes, in Indigenous folklore in Australia, they call them “passion fish”.
According to local legend, two forbidden lovers Boodi and Yalima wanted to marry against the elder’s wishes.
Determined to be together, they ran away. The tribal elders chased them to a cliff where the waters began.
To defend themselves, the two gathered wood and made many spears. But the tribesman were too numerous, and the lover’s spears were quickly spent.
Boodi turned to his beloved Yalima and said, “for us to be together, we must dive into the sea to live” and they jumped off the cliff.
Boodi and Yalima are still there in the waters, in the shape of the barramundi. And the spines on their fins are said to be the spears thrown at them by the tribe.
Barramundi may not be well known here, but it’s very common in Australia. We’re so delighted that our friends at Sandplains Aquaculture (near London) grow them… so we can share the special powers of this “passion fish” with all of you!
