Fish don’t drink water?

We always find this funny, because ours don’t!

In fresh water, a fish has a higher salt concentration than the surrounding water. So they absorb the water they need through their gills.

Fish in salt water are the oppose. The surrounding water is saltier than their bodies, so they gulp water and filter in their kidneys to keep their electrolytes in balance.

Trout, salmon and char are incredible creatures because their whole system can reverse itself if they’re travelling between fresh and salt water. It isn’t instant though, as they’ll hang out in brackish water (part fresh, part salty) for a few weeks before heading either direction.

Compared to other livestock, fish are actually some of the lowest users of water. Scottish researchers found that farmed fish use less than half the water it takes to grow the same amount of chicken!
